How many hours do I need to take?
Salespeople will have to take a minimum of six (6) hours of continuing education prior to their license being renewed in July 2003.
Set-up contractors will have to take a minimum of four (4) hours.
If I take more than the required number of continuing education hours during the licensing year, do I lose those extra hours?
No. Salespeople that take more than the required amount of continuing education hours may carry over a maximum of six continuing education hours to the next licensing year. Any continuing education hours above the maximum amounts will not be counted.
I have recently left a sales center and am starting with a new sales center. Do I have to re-register?
If you have paid for the course, you can take the course and get credit with your new sales center. If the sales center paid for you to take the course, then the registration stays with the company, not with the salesperson.
What if I am licensed as a salesperson and a set-up contractor? Do I have to take both minimum continuing education hours?
Yes. You need to take the minimum six (6) hours for the salesperson license and minimum of four (4) hours for set-up contractors. Therefore you need a total of ten (10) continuing education hours before you can renew your licenses. If you attend a class which is offered for both set-up contractors and salespeople, you can not count that class for the ten (10) required hours. You will have to take another class to complete your required hours.
I live/work in a smaller town. Can NCMHI teach a class there?
NCMHI sets up classes in the larger cities across the state. The reason for doing this is to be able to accommodate the largest amount of people. Chances are, a class that you will need to take will be within a reasonable driving distance.
I received a flyer for a continuing education class. Who do I call to sign up for the class?
Only flyers that have the NCMHI logo on the bottom are NCMHI sponsored classes. Other companies will be offering continuing education courses. You need to contact the person who is named on the flyer. The other companies will not know of the other courses.
Will I be tested on the information?
No. The classes are designed for you to learn new information. Participants will receive all needed materials the day of the class as well as a certificate showing that they have completed the course.
I own a set-up contractor company with many employees. Do all of my employees have to take continuing education hours in order for my company to remain licensed?
No. Each set-up contractor must have at least one employee that acts as a qualifier for your company. For companies that were first licensed after July 1, 1999, the person that took the state's set-up contractor exam for your company is your company's qualifier. In order to remain in the position of qualifier for the company, that person must take the four (4) hours of continuing education before next July. Companies that were initially licensed prior to July 1, 1999, must select an employee to take the four (4) hours of continuing education by next July. That employee will then be the new qualifier for the company.
Do I have to have a qualifier for each of my set-up crews?
No. Each set-up contractor must have at least one qualifier employed by the company. If the person that is named as the qualifier leaves, the Department of Insurance must be notified within 10 days and a new qualifier must be hired before the license is renewed the following July. It is recommended that each set-up contractor company have one or more qualifiers for the company. Each year, each qualifier must take the four (4) hours of continuing education to remain as a qualifier.
